It’s our pleasure to introduce An-Mari Honiball, the second of eight finalists in the ELLE Rising Star Award in association with Mr Price.

Anmari-Honiball

When did you know that fashion design was what you wanted to do?

I fell in love with the stories that clothes can tell from a very young age. I use to make these 15cm tall paper dolls whom I spoiled with boxes full of tiny, hand-drawn paper clothes. Each outfit made her into a different character with a different story.

How did you get into design?

I studied fashion design at Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design in Stellenbosch.

Tell us one thing we need to know about you as a designer.

I care about everything I create.

First fashion memory?

When I was about five years old I designed a black woven pencil skirt without any seams. I asked my mom to make it and was deeply upset when she had to explain to me it was impossible to have no seams.

How did you feel when your name was called as a finalist?

Great! It was so unexpected because it happened four days before the callback date mentioned in the brief. I was sitting at a restaurant with my friend when Jackie Burger phoned; needless to say, the evening ended much later than planned.

One thing about your collection that sets you apart from the others?

My clothes carry a heightened sensitivity.

Do you work late at night or early mornings?

My second burst of energy usually kicks in late at night.

What do you listen to while you work?

I actually prefer working in silence.

Describe your favorite outfit.

I always end up wearing worn-out black linen trousers with a secondhand black silk top that I’ve altered into some abstract shape.

If design weren’t an option, what would you do?

Paint.

Why do you want to win the ELLE Rising Star competition – what does it mean to you?

I would absolutely LOVE to work on the commercial range for Mr. Price and spend the week with them. I will make fashion design my career regardless, but if I were to win this competition it would certainly make everything a bit easier.

Who would you love to dress?

Anyone and everyone!
