Ever wondered what the must-have products are in a beauty editors make-up bag? Give your mind a rest because ELLE’s Beauty Ed, Nicole Newman, gives us her very own top product picks (and how she uses them).
1. Elizabeth Arden Eight-Hour Cream Skin Protectant
To say that I am obsessed with this product would be an understatement (me, over exaggerate? never…). I use it, quite literally, all over my face. I love my face to look fresh, dewy and hydrated, even if achieving this look means I need to cheat a little. I use this cream on my cheekbones (to give a dewy glow), my eyebrows (to keep them glossy and in place), on my eyelids for the ‘wet-eye’ look and, of course, on my lips to make my natural colour just that little bit pinker (it’s a word, take my word for it). It’s an all-rounder.
2. Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen
I recently discovered this skin gem and can’t remember what I did without it. It lifts my skin’s glow (even on the dullest of days) and, when I can’t be asked to wear foundation, I wear it on its own. It literally reflects the light in all the right places. I’m not shy when it comes to applying this miracle pen – I do small brush strokes on my cheekbones (this is before the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream), a light stroke down the bridge of my nose, two dashes underneath my eyebrows, a stroke tracing my upper lip and two tiny touches in the corners of my eye. I then use my ring finger (it gives a softer blend) to lightly buff the strokes into my skin.
3. Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer
Okay, so I know this isn’t a beauty product as such but the way my make-up looks is pretty much dependant on the condition of my skin. I don’t think I could function without this. It is leave-on, brightening exfoliant that smoothes the skin and adds insane hydration. Before I started using this clogged pores used to be a huge issue for me but since using this everyday they have never caused me grief again. I use this after double-cleansing my face and before applying my serum.
4. Benefit They’re Real! Tinted Lash Primer
As I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, I thoroughly enjoy a very low-maintenance make-up look. This basically means that, despite the fact that I may have many steps in my skin and make-up routine, I like to look as though I haven’t even tried. This tinted lash primer is the perfect mascara for my look because of its light consistency and natural shade of brown pigment. I do two light strokes of this to lengthen and slightly tint my lashes. The best part is that if I’m going out in the evening I can apply a heavier mascara with the base already set!
5. Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1
Unfortunately for me, I have always been a suffered from dry lips. I have tried every lip treatment under the sun to curb this chapped situation. This lip balm has saved my poor pout and opened up the doors to being able to wear my favourite lipstick shades for hours. I apply a little in the morning while doing my make-up so that it can sink in and nourish my lips and then reapply 2-3 times throughout the day. If I am going to be wearing a lip colour I apply slightly less (either that or at least a couple minutes before applying my lippy) so that it doesn’t dilute the colour.
6. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Rouge Audace
I was lucky enough to attend the launch of the Chanel Fall Make-Up Collection – Le Rouge Collection No.1 where I found my all-time favourite lip colour, Rouge Audace. It is the perfect shade of deep red and goes with literally every piece of clothing I own. It is non-drying and doesn’t fade or smudge throughout the day. Trust me to have fallen in love with a lipstick that’s a limited edition.
