When we first heard about – and told you about – Avant Garde we were immediately excited about this collaborative competition run by eco-conscious and eco-chic SA website Liveeco. Does it ring any bells? Let’s refresh your memory.

Liveeco partnered with one of Cape Town’s top fashion design schools, the Design Academy of Fashion (DAF), and since then the DAF’s second-year students have been busy creating upcycled looks from unwanted clothing donated by the public. Last week, ELLE editor Jackie Burger helped choose the 12 finalists – and as eco-conscious design is a subject close to her heart, none of us were surprised that she jumped at the chance.

We asked Jackie:

Did the students’ work meet your expectations?

I didn’t really know what to expect but for second-year students to produce this calibre of work is really impressive.

What stood out to you?

I got the distinct feeling that the students were challenged to work outside the norm but had fun doing so. A win-win situation!

What is it about the competition that made you agree to act as a judge?

Nikki Seegers’ [the founder and editor-in-chief of Liveeco] vision and passion, and the fact that it involved young creative minds to work with the principles of sustainable fashion design.

The brief? Nikki spelt it out for us: ‘Students had to use old and unwanted clothing to upcycle an Avant Garde look inspired by the Cape floral kingdom, which was the theme in the brief. They were not allowed to buy any materials except lining and had to use natural dyes, etc. They were allowed complete freedom when it came to the interpretation of their designs.’

The result? Spectacular designs, an overload of creativity and a mind-blowing approach to creating a look that is entirely eco-conscious.

The winner? Here’s the exciting part… it’s up to you! Vote for your favourite design and you could win a Citizen Eco-Drive watch worth R5 000, just by voting.

The winner will be announced on 19 November at The Green Expo in Cape Town.

And here they are… the 12 finalists and their amazing creations – go ahead and vote by clicking here. Visit Liveeco to read more on each designer’s inspiration and thinking, the concept and hard work that went into these looks.
