The quaint stationery store, Ebony & Ivory, in Diep River, Cape Town is the perfect secret treasure trove. In addition to the old-school luxury Petersham and cotton ribbon they have extended their range of gift tags, cards and all things gift-related. Take our word for it, this is seriously beautiful stuff.

Never ones to let a new shopping opportunity go uninvestigated, we chatted to owners Eulalia Rodriguez and Igna Schwartz.

What inspired the look and feel of the store?
Eulalia’s mother ran an antiques store here for 30 years (antique furniture still makes up a big part of the business), so the space already had an old-world, antique feel. When we moved in, we just reenergised the space and gave it our own touches. Igna comes from a design and crafts background, which is why there is a lot of ‘hardware’ in the shop.

What makes your stationery store different from others?
We design all our own products and you won’t find them anywhere else. Just about everything is designed and manufactured in South Africa. We only import (and this is very rarely) when a design cannot be found locally.

Why Ebony & Ivory?
Well, our names begin with an E and an I, and it describes our personalities. Even our looks match it!

Which is your favourite product at the moment?
We really love our ribbons with our own original designs, which are a constant throughout the year. And they’re not girly or frilly, which is great for Father’s Day gifts.
