Maphorisa and the Black Motion duo join Nandi Madida and others in Brooklyn, New York, this weekend.
We’re waiting (rather impatiently) for AFROPUNK JOHANNESBURG to arrive, tickets in hand. For New Yorkers, however, the wait for AFROPUNK BROOKLYN is almost over and now includes a sweet surprise with the addition of local favourites DJ Maphorisa and Black Motion to the world class DJ lineup.
Pretoria-born DJ Maphorisa, the mind responsible for 2013 mega hit “Y-Tjukutja” and soon-to-be-hit “Particula” featuring Jidenna, Nasty C, Ice Prince and Patroranking, has enjoyed some recent global acclaim for his production work on songs by Black Coffee, Emtee, Major Lazer, Jason Derulo, Wizkid, Davido, Trey Songz. Black Motion has had a great year too, with their 2016 album Ya Badimo going platinum and winning them the 2017 Best Duo and Best Dance Album SAMAs.
Maphorisa and Black Motion are last-minute but stellar additions to the AFROPUNK BROOKLYN lineup, already featuring Shabaka And The Ancestors, a jazz ensemble mostly made up of South Africans, as well as a blend of international mainstream and underground favourites like Solange, Jorja Smith, Raphael Saadiq, Anderson.Paak & The Free Nationals, SZA, Kaytranada, Sampha, and Thundercat.
More names are on the way for AFROPUNK Joburg, but so far Solange, Laura Mvula, Spoek Mathambo, Black Motion, Manthe Ribane & OKZharp, DJ Lag, Nakhane Toure, Nonku Phiri and more have been announced.
