From bad tans to ill fitting swimsuits flashing the crowd, everyone has their fair share of cringe-worthy beach blunders. On page 58 of the November issue of ELLE magazine, our editorial team told us about theirs and now some of our favourite local designers do the same.

BeachBlunders

2011 ELLE Rising Star Design Award winner, Kelly Esterhuyse (who’s range is in Mr Price stores) says,  ‘It was a blistering hot day, so a bunch of my girlfriends and I made our way down to the beach. In a rush to get into the water to cool down, I dived into a huge wave only to discover thatwhen I came up my bikini top was around my waist!’

Jewellery designer and owner of Pichulik, Katherine-Mary says, ‘I once fell asleep in the sun and woke up with sunburnt eyelids. I felt so embarrassed. With a combination of foundation and wearing rather nasty sunglasses (indoors), I tried to ride the “aloof babe in shades in a beach bar” vibe, but looking back I think it was more of a scary Karl Lagerfeld look.’

Designer Gert-Johan Coetzee says, ‘Once I put on self-tan to get ready for the beach, and when I took my shoes off to walk on the sand I realised that my feet were still white like a ghost’s, so I had to spend the whole day hiding my feet under the sand!’

2012 ELLE Rising Star Award winner Jane Elizabeth Kotze says, ‘I rarely tan as my skin is very fair and I burn easily, but my best friend assured me that she had discovered a failsafe way of tanning without getting burnt. All you had to do was press your finger onto your skin every now and again, and if it left a white mark, you knew you were done for the day. So we set off to Camps Bay, put on our SPF and tested her tanning method.   Well, I still got burnt, a little. Luckily we didn’t stay out too long, but this year I’m sporting a big hat and SPF50.’
