ASK AN EXPERT: GAVIN RAJAH ON THE WEDDING DRESS
What are the bridal couture trends for 2013?
We are moving away from conventional dresses that all have the same silhouette or are done in conventional white. Colour is playing a huge part. Even if the entire dress is done in the conventional white or off-white, there are accents in colour or embellishment.
Any outrageous requests from brides to be?
Making a dress that had to be embroidered with seashells. Shells are really fragile when you try to make holes in them to attach them to the dress. Plus we had to sand down each shell so that there were no rough edges that snagged the fabric.
Best advice to the bride on her design?
The dress must suit the bride’s body shape and she must be able to wear it without it overpowering her.
Interesting silk georgette manipulation and intricate embroidery and beading.
Spotted on Gavin Rajah’s Facebook page: ‘wedding dress train and skirt with layers and layers of silk organza, it required the patience of a saint!’
What are the colour trends for bridesmaids this season?
Pastels and prints.
Anything else our future brides need to know?
Have fun with your wedding: stressing about things beyond your control is a waste of energy. If you don’t have fun you will end up making people around you miserable and you will not enjoy the entire experience.
