Our March issue included a feature titled ‘Women in Art’, where we celebrated several South African female artists whose work inspires us. We erroneously published the above image of artist Buhlebezwe Siwani without a photographer credit. The beautiful image was taken by photographer Lauren Theunissen (pictured below) .
Lauren Theunissen was born in Cape Town, South Africa. Theunissen completed her BAFA at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT, 2015, majoring in Photography and Discourse of Art. Theunissen is the 2016/2017 recipient of the Tierney Fellowship Award. In her artistic practice, Theunissen’s photography and photobooks share a personal encounter with the city of Cape Town as opposed to the well packaged, high-gloss brochure representations of the city. She is currently preparing a body of work that focuses on urbanism in east city, Cape Town.
Whilst having been trained in Fine Art photography, Theunissen also enjoys putting her skills to use in the realm of commercial photography. She has recently launched a portraiture project in which she photographs fellow creatives in Cape Town. Theunissen is currently practicing as an artist and working as a freelance photographer Cape Town.
