Businesswoman Carol Bouwer is putting on a fashion extravaganza in Cape Town in June with American celebrity stylist June Ambrose
Eclectic and acclaimed American stylist and fashion designer June Ambrose is coming to South Africa for an empowerment summit aimed at young professionals in the fashion and beauty business. Conceived by Carol Bouwer Productions, the event is being billed as an African Odyssey and will also include a Style Icon gala dinner – modelled on the Met – at the Cape Town City Hall on 16 June.
Bouwer said in a statement that she was motivated by creating a movement of change in the industry. “Through social media and one-on-one interactions with young South African women, I am often asked how I parlayed my initial success in TV into a business. The idea has been simmering for a while and after a meeting of the minds with June late last year, I decided to create an event – a ‘movement’ in which women can engage and learn from those who have done it before. I am excited to see this platform take shape,” she said.
Ambrose started her career at MCA Records, before becoming a global style icon, working with stars who include Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z and Diddy. She’s put together looks that have become iconic in the music industry, such as for Missy Elliot’s debut video The Rain and Notorious B.I.G’s Mo Money, Mo Problems. Her list of clients reads like a who’s who of Hollywood A-listers including Zoe Saldana, Mariah Carey, Kerry Washington, Kelly Ripa, Luther Vandross, the Backstreet Boys, Kim Cattrall, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Estelle, Garcelle Beauvais, Gabrielle Union and Ciara.
She started as a fashion intern, after a short stint in investment banking, and is expected to share the steps to her career success at the workshop. Attendees will have the opportunity of participating in the interactive panel discussion with prominent SA businesswomen, Style File workshops curated by Ambrose and networking opportunities. Panelists will include business leaders like SA Fashion Council’s Anita Stanbury and founder of Ndalo Media Khanyi Dhlomo, who will impart their personal triumphs and experiences. DESTINY is partnering with Carol Bouwer Productions on the event, alongside UN Women, Edcon’s Orange Initiatives, Unicef and the City of Cape Town.
Ambrose will present a fashion show at the gala dinner and guests have been invited to don their best Met-inspired looks for the elegant event.
