As we celebrate Women’s Month this August, sports apparel brand Under Armour is honouring athletes who are driven by their inner strength, grit and the will to overcome the seemingly impossible #UnlikeAny
Misty Copeland is the epitome of excellence and a woman who is shattering the glass ceiling.
She’s the first African-American dancer to become a principal ballerina for the American Ballet Company – a feat she attributes to her inner strength.
“I believe in the power of inner strength and how it can push you to accomplish the seemingly impossible. The campaign is a celebration of that inner strength that lives in every single person and a reminder for every woman out there, who feels less than because of unnecessary comparisons, that they are strong, unique and truly Unlike Any,” Copeland says.
Described by those who know her as fearless, Alison Désir, a long-distance runner and founder of the Harlem Run Crew, turned her passion for running into a political activism campaign.
Motivated by the concern that women’s access to reproductive healthcare could come under threat after the election of US President Donald Trump, Désir created a crowdfunding campaign for planned parenthood, raising more than half a million rands.
Earlier this year Désir, along with three other women, ran from New York to Washington DC, covering a total distance of 386,2km.
These remarkable women join prolific athletes including world champion sprinter Natasha Hastings, professional stunt woman Jessie Graff and Chinese taekwondo champion Zoe Zhang as ambassadors for Under Armour’s global #UnlikeAny campaign – a celebration of a woman’s tenacious spirit.
Having exceeded expectations and challenged the status quo in their respective fields, the campaign features the women in short films reciting powerful poems written for them by artists who have created some of the world’s most thought-provoking work.
“We aim to inspire women everywhere to continue making history in their own lives. We have always been a brand that celebrates women, and this is just another reminder that we stand for her, with her and because of her,” says Adrienne Lofton, Under Armour senior vice-president of global brand management.
To celebrate the dream and drive of women who are beyond comparison, the performance brand is giving all women who have active lifestyles who are #UnlikeAny the chance to win R25 000 worth of Under Armour gear.
