Self-described as the ‘Bionic Model’, Rebekah Marine – born without a right forearm – has dreamt of becoming a model since she was a child.
Born in West Deptford, USA, Marine was told at 22 that she would never be accepted into the harsh fashion industry. Now 28, Marine wears an Advanced Arm Dynamics’ i-limb Quantum (one of the most advanced prosthetic hands in the world) and will be walking at this year’s FTL Moda show at New York Fashion Week (NYFW).
‘Agencies often won’t even look at my portfolio,’ Marine told Mashable. ‘But I’ve come to realise it’s all about finding your niche. I’ve accepted that most clients may not want to work with me based on my “disability”‘.
‘It’s so important to include more diverse models, because after all, nearly one in five people in America have a disability,’ she continued. ‘We should be celebrating uniqueness; not conforming to what the media thinks is beautiful. You don’t have to fit a stereotype.’
This season, we are looking at some of the most exciting runway debuts in history. Marine will be joined on the FTL Moda catwalk on the 13 September by Australian teen-model sensation, Madeline Stuart, an eighteen year old with Down syndrome, as well as recent transgender transformed Caitlyn Jenner, rumoured to be walking for Givenchy on the 11th.
