This Aussie Blogger Shares What Fashion Month Is Really Like

BTS fashion week wrap-up with Jessie Bush.

Jet-setting between the world’s fashion capitals to attend runway shows and photograph the best street style looks is all in a day’s work for Jessie Bush.

The New Zealand-born tastemaker and founder of We The People Style has become a regular at fashion week, known among the sartorial set for her laidback styling and cool-girl city guides.

We caught up with Jessie to get the scoop on what really goes down at fashion week and how she keeps her Insta aesthetic so damn sleek.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CITY FOR FASHION WEEK?

I always love visiting all four of the cities, but my favourite is probably New York; it’s the first major fashion week so there’s excitement in the air, and it’s fun to catch up with friends from around the world. New York is so vibrant and lively, and the people have such a cool sense of personal style so it’s super inspiring.

HOW DO YOU PREP FOR FASHION WEEK?

I generally just go through my wardrobe and style looks based on the season, which obviously requires a different approach for summer and winter. I make sure I have all the basics covered (denim, tees, crisp shirting, a cool coat) and then just style each look on the day depending on my mood and the weather. Before I leave (I’m usually away for four weeks over NYFW, LFW, MFW and PFW) I make sure my beauty products are topped up, and try to make sure I’m caught up on sleep. That’s about it!

WHAT ARE THE WARDROBE MVPS YOU ALWAYS TAKE TO FASHION WEEK?

I’ll always pack my favourite shoes of the moment (be it a killer heel or a cool trainer), something I know I can pair with pretty much any look, my go-to blue jeans and a statement bag. I think that embroidery is having a strong run, something that Furlaembraced fully in their latest collection with the Furla Ducale Bag.

WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE SHOWS OF THE SEASON AND WHY?

Tibi in NYC was amazing; they went back to their roots with lots of wearable yet cool pieces. Acne in Paris is always super fun to check out–it’s interesting to see their latest vision. This summer, it was lots of sparkles; totally left-field, but it worked well.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN FASHION WEEK IS DONE AND DUSTED?

Usually, I water my plants! It’s generally the first time I’ve been home in a month or so, so it’s nice to get back into a routine–do the washing, catch up on emails and cook a meal or two.

WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAPPENED DURING THE CIRCUS THAT IS FASHION WEEK?

It’s not fashion-week related, but my fiancé and I took a night off in NYC and went to the famous Comedy Cellar to see some local comedians. I’d 100% recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

WHAT ARE THE BEST STREET STYLE TRENDS THAT INSPIRED YOU?

After several seasons of people dressing for the cameras and then a few years of strict minimalism, it was nice to see a balance between the two; a happy medium where people dressed for themselves.

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE INSTAGRAM DO’S AND DON’TS?

Do: shoot in natural light, develop your own aesthetic, and be authentic.
Don’t: over-think the shot, add a crazy amount of hashtags, or over-edit your photos.
