While making a U-turn in the rain copy editor Erla spotted a sign that said: Palmer Road, the heart of old Muizenberg. Naturally she had to explore.

The narrow street actually starts of as Killarney Road but Palmer Road’s renovated, creative fun-ness has spilled over into it. Killarney Road is also where I spotted The Real Bread Company that surely has to be Cape Town’s smallest bakery. Their bread is big though and they supply everyone’s trendy favourite hangout, Superette in Woodstock, among others. The rye bread I bought there had everyone in rapture when I got home.

I was hungry but pressed for time and kept going past several tempting restaurants. Two that particularly caught my eye were Kitch Kombuis and Closer, a vegan restaurant, that I will definitely return to for its vegan burger that apparently is something else (a combination of falafel and aubergine with home-made tomato sauce).

Just as I was about to dash back to the car, I spotted The Pot Spot. My tastes are more Scandinavian chic than rustic farmhouse and I generally run a mile from any sign that promises earthenware. However, I was on a mission of discovery for ELLE and, all in the line of duty, turned around and rang the bell. And am I glad I did. Tessa Gawith’s ceramic kitchenware is truly beautiful with clean lines and simple shapes. I bought four bowls on the spot to get my Christmas gift cache started. Everything is really affordable and want-able and my only regret is not buying a few of the pretty cups and saucers too. But I know where to go now. Call Tessa on 083 700 5674 or simply go on an outing to Muizenberg Village. It’s a treat!
