Jenna McArthur spent some time in Durban last week, working on an exciting shoot for our July issue and stopping in on hot spots, exciting places and meeting inspiring people.

Checking in with Durban-based designer, Terrence Bray added to an exciting trip. Terrence’s spring/summer 2011/12 collection titled ‘Cambodia in my Yard’ is a collection which explores dreams of far off places and is created on his doorstep. Drawing inspiration from his own backyard the collection of soft digital prints on natural fabrics was created as photographer Vaughn Trevvellyn captured plants in the garden, close-ups of the garden’s natural beauty which were kaleidoscoped and supersized to create dramatic digital prints on soft summer friendly natural fabrics.

Describe your personal style
Non-existent, I spend all my time giving my style energy to others – there is nothing left for me! [Laughs].

Tell us a little more about the inspiration behind the collection
It was a literal interpretation of my ‘dream space’, my garden, how I interact with it and how my pets do, and the difference in scale and perspective.

Must-haves for winter?
A classic leather riding boot never seems to get old.

What do you love about living in Durban?
The compact convenience yet vast spaces make it a great place for big dreams.

What sets your latest collection apart from the others?
I think the personal inspiration and colour.

Favourite spot for lunch in Durban?
Ciao Bella Point Road – you can taste the passion in every mouthful!

When did you first fall in love with fashion?
I first fell in love with textiles and haberdashery then I realised it could all be crafted in wonderful things, the options were endless. Fashion was a natural progression, given my love for the human form and psyche.

Any advice for aspiring designers?
Be sure, because it’s not as glamorous as it appears. You need to eat, sleep and breathe it.
