We have our eight finalists for the 2015 ELLE Rising Star Design Awards in association with MRP… and eight unique and innovative collections in the making. While we wait in anticipation to see our finalists’ collections, we get to know them a little better over the next four weeks. Today we chat to finalist, Daisie Jo Grobler.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am Daisie Jo Grobler, 20-years-old and a 3rd year student at the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design in Stellenbosch. I grew up in Ladybrand in the Eastern Free State, a border town near Maseru, Lesotho. Growing up in a small town, the khaki of local farmers, blankets of the Basotho herd boys and Chanel suits of the European Embassy people, all contributed to my fascination with fashion.
Where did you hear about ELLE Rising Star and what are you looking forward to?
It is the biggest competition in South Africa for up-and-coming designers, so I have been following it for quite some time. I am looking forward to the whole process. It is quite overwhelming and surreal. I am so privileged to be able to be a part of it. Overwhelmed and ecstatic!
What is your collection about?
The concept of my collection is ‘Honesty over perfection’. Honesty in creating it, how it is made, constructed and loved.
What inspired this collection?
I like to bring in a part of my heritage. My Ouma was a very big part of my life. Her flower gardens & embroidery still inspire me everyday. She used to sew, embroider and knit, and I have made it quite a big part of my range. I believe that if I work hard, the doors will open. Like Laduma Ngxokolo says: ‘Hard work opens any doors. Also people should not focus on the success of external subjects but focus on themselves and their own work, as everyone is unique.’
The fabric you will use includes?
My range mainly consists of hemp and cotton blends. 100% hemp, chunky knits, bold embroidery, and finished off with gingham binding. I have also created my own prints, floral illustrations and pressed flowers from my Ouma’s garden.
How does your collection stand out?
I believe in putting passion and love into everything. I strive to create beautiful things. Timeless, sophisticated, but still have an edge.
Describe one key piece in your collection.
The printed slip dress with knitted sleeves. Versatile and sophisticated, yet fun.
Your favourite trend right now?
I like to stay aware of what is going on around me, but I don’t religiously follow trends. When someone feels beautiful, and you can see it in the way they carry themselves. I feel that’s all that matters. Honesty over perfection.
You can’t go a day without…
….making a to-do list.
Who is your dream customer?
South African designers on your radar?
Jessica Harwood for Take Care, Laduma Ngxokolo for Maxhosa, Amy Venter for Jane Sews and always always Marianne Fassler.
Your vision for your future label?
I love South Africa and hope to build a career in our vibrant local fashion industry. I strive to create beautiful garments. I’d like the brand to be transparent.
Stay tuned as we introduce our next 2015 ELLE Rising Star finalist on Tuesday!
